Critics have called Sarah Nelson’s work “exceptional,” (St. Louis Limelight Magazine) with the ability to take a “score that’s all over the map and make it flow seamlessly” (BroadwayWorld).  She was nominated for a St. Louis Theatre Circle Award for her work on Lizzie at New Line Theatre, where she musically directed many other shows.  Sarah was the musical director for the new musical #Adulting, which premiered Off-Broadway at St. Luke’s Theatre.  This summer, she will serve as music director at the Forestburgh Playhouse in upstate New York.

Sarah has worked extensively as both a music director and a vocal coach.  Some of her other favorite credits include The Light in the Piazza at R-S Theatrics and The Zombies of Penzance, a creative re-writing of Gilbert and Sullivan’s operetta.  She is especially interested in the production of new work and has music directed several stage readings since moving to New York City.

As an educator, Sarah has worked with organizations such as Variety Children’s Charity of St. Louis, Center of Creative Arts, and Arizona Magic of Music and Dance to bring music and theatre to underserved populations through summer camps and classes.  Sarah has also taught private piano lessons and adult group classes for over a decade.

Sarah has worked as an accompanist for Northern Arizona University, Webster University, and New York University, where she earned her Master of Music in Collaborative Piano.  Apart from her work as a performer, Sarah is actively pursuing her interest in songwriting and composition; she is the composer of the new musical Sparky, a bio-musical about the life of Peanuts creator Charles Schulz, and is a composer at the BMI Workshop.  In her spare time, Sarah runs half-marathons, and takes care of her two chihuahuas.
